Manufactured Consent – Gates and Tedros buy influence in African health

Written by: Shabnam Palesa Mohamed

The thinly disguised scramble for Africa continues, and South Africa is its pivotal battleground. The last few weeks have seen the secret ballot elected WHO director-general Adhenom Tedros Ghebreysus and Big Pharma profiteer Bill Gates surface prominently in South Africa, where a hotly-debated mRNA production hub was recently launched. While Tedros received a controversial honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria, Gates is reportedly funding a secretive WHO-linked maternal and newborn conference to the volume of at least $9 million.

The Gates’ funded mother and child conference

The conference, which launches 8 May 2023, is described on its website: “For the first time in more than eight years, the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC) 2023 will bring together the maternal newborn health communities in Cape Town, South Africa. More than 1,500 stakeholders from around the world will come together to accelerate solutions to improve maternal and newborn survival and prevent stillbirths as we strive to achieve the ambitious targets outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Interestingly, this mega-conference is not listed on the CTICC website. In 2020, calls were made in South Africa to use the CTICC as a quarantine site for Covid-19, in a city where its homeless were forced into the notorious Strandfontein facility, witnessed to violate legal and human rights principles in the much lauded  South African Bill of Rights. The disparities between the billionaires and the rest are stark.

A worried whistle-blower alerted CHD Africa’s executive director Shabnam Palesa Mohamed about the lucrative CTICC conference, apparently aimed at the country’s poor. She shared “They called it the maternity event. They are keeping it quiet. They are not advertising it. Last week, WHO people were there, and Tedros received honours from Tuks university. Doctors from America, Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand etc are attending this conference. It’s more than 1000 doctors. I’m really scared for the future and mRNA vaccines for babies.”

Gates, the infamous philanthro-capitalist, is unwelcome in India for his organisation’s central role in harming Indian people. In 2010, the Gates Foundation funded experimental HPV vaccine programs in India and malaria and meningitis vaccine trials across Africa. These NGO programs resulted in deaths and injuries, with experiences of forced vaccinations and uninformed consent reported to great outrage. Still, Gates is known to be obsessed with vaccine return on investment. The WHO’s scandalous history in Africa incudes medical experimentation in Kenyan girls and women, leaving millions infertile, and is lead by Tedros, accused of aiding and abetting genocide in Ethiopia.

Hosts, partners and sponsors to the conference include the following, and more:

Tedros, honorary degrees, and Africa

In April, Tedros received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria. The University, known as Tuks, received funding from the Gates Foundation for various projects including malaria and agriculture, in which Gates is an investor in harmful GMO technology.

Tedros has been collecting honorary degrees, professorship and fellowship from around the world. Some high profile PR gains include:

But how is Tedros conferred with these honours, when the controversial WHO director-general stands accused of genocide in his home country, Ethiopia? Moreover, the WHO stands accused of facilitating inhumane experiments in Kenya, that rendered millions of girls and women infertile. Do academic institutions conduct research into serious crimes, or are ethics committees double-blinded for the benefits?

Gates and Tedros are manufacturing consent and buying influence in Africa. South Africa is seen by the corporatocracy as a gateway to dominating African people and resources. With Rwanda selected as the headquarters for the Gates-funded African Medicines Agency, both countries may want to talk to Kenyans and Ethiopians about what it means to be African, and how to protect African sovereignty.

A few days ago, Tedros announced something we all knew: The Covid-19 ’emergency’ is over. It’s time for the students, alumni, academic staff, and workers of academic institutions to declare the time for Tedros to receive further ‘honorary’ accolades is over. The people of The DRC, sexually abused by WHO workers and dismissed by failures to properly investigate, must be heard, apologised to, and see justice.

* Travel Overview: The International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC) 2023 takes place 8 – 11 May 2023 at the CTICC in Cape Town South Africa.
